Though He scoffs at the scoffers and scorns the scorners, yet He gives His grace [His undeserved favor] to the humble [those who give up self-importance]. PROVERBS 3:34 AMP
Almost anywhere we go, we encounter people who approach life with arms thrown wide, head held high, nostrils flared, and mouth blazing. Even without a word, they seem to holler, "I am here. I am an essential being! You may need to step out of the way." Yes, God made us all, and we are all essential. However, in this life we will be a lot godlier, not to mention happier, if we leave room for others—and maybe even consider them to be more important than we are. Really?
The New Testament book of Philippians reminds us, "Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others" (Philippians 2:3–4 ESV). That collapses the air right out of any balloon-ish pride.
Ruth was a humble woman in her words and deeds, and God gave her grace—undeserved favor. God no longer looked at her past or the fact that she'd come from the pagan land of Moab. It only mattered who she was now—and that she walked humbly with her God.
God, help me not to be so full of myself. Let me see others as You see them. I want to always walk humbly with You by my side. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
